Please check back for updates on our species repopulation projects. We are currently consulting with experts to determine the best methods for species repopulation for our site and our surrounding areas. We are working to partner with schools, universities, zoos, botanical gardens, and science centers to aid us in increasing the biodiversity of the rainforest in a culturally and socially appropriate manner.
One way to bring wildlife back into a region is to increase the animal’s support system, that is, the plants, animals, and habitat that are required for its existence. Animals’ needs are similar to humans; they need food, water, shelter, and space to roam. When we supply animals with these basic needs, in sufficient quantity and quality, they naturally want to settle in and make a home.
We are working to target the following groups first because they top the list of species that are endangered or have their habitats greatly threatened in Belize:
- Bats (especially Van Gelder’s)
- Iguanas (green, black, and basilisks)
- Baird’s Tapir
- Giant Anteater
- Scarlet Macaw
- Jabiru Stork
- Bees
